Justice

Being friends includes concern for issues like justice. Hindus might be experiencing discrimination or feel marginalised. Your sensitivity and appropriate involvement could be greatly appreciated.

Churches have sometimes shown attitudes of racial and religious prejudice. Black Christians from the Caribbean found coldness instead of a warm welcome when they came to Britain. East African Christians never thought that Asians could follow Christ and so they did not share their faith with them for many years.

And Christian leaders have not always spoken out when society turns against immigrants, whether vulnerable refugees or well established citizens. Sometimes these attitudes arise from fear, as Christians see the growth of temples or the popularity of Eastern meditation. Instead of loving and welcoming people of other faiths, Christians have been tempted to avoid them.

Genuine love could mean speaking out and acting for justice. Sometimes it is just a matter of taking the initiative to cross barriers.

A young woman in East London described her attempt:

When the mothers come for their children after school, they stand in two groups. The Asian mothers are on one side and the white mothers on the opposite. They don’t talk to each other. They don’t even make eye contact. Last Tuesday I went and stood next to the Asian mothers.
